Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur played out a Champions League classic on Wednesday night.

Tottenham held a slender advantage going into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium having won 1-0 a week prior.

But, while the first leg was a largely drab affair, the second leg was anything but.

There were five goals in the opening 21 minutes.

Raheem Sterling and Heung-min Son both netted twice, while Bernardo Silva was also on the score-sheet as City led 3-2 on the night.

Sergio Aguero’s goal in the 59th minute gave City the lead for the first time in the tie and it looked as if they would make the semi-finals.

However, the final 20 minutes was full of drama, with VAR taking centre stage.

Fernando Llorente found the back of the net with 17 minutes to go.

However, VAR was consulted and replays appeared to show the ball brushing Llorente’s arm.

Eventually, the goal was given, meaning Tottenham were now the team going through via away goals.

With the game in stoppage time, Raheem Sterling looked to have completed his hat-trick and sent City through.

But, VAR was again consulted and City’s ecstasy quickly turned to despair when it showed Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

Two massive VAR decisions on the night both went Spurs’ way.

And one man that was not happy with the decisions that were made is Fernandinho.

Simon Mullock of the Mirror asked the Brazilian for a word in the mixed zone after the game, to which Fernandinho replied: “F*** VAR.”

Wow. It’s understandable that he is frustrated but both decisions VAR made on the night were correct.

Pep Guardiola said City’s Champions League exit was ‘cruel’ after the game.

“It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it,” he said, per the Sun.

“After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up. In the second half, we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed.

“Unfortunately, it was a bad end to us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals.

“I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not.”
